When Chosen Family Doesn’t Feel Simple: Loneliness, Belonging, and Queer Relationships
There is a particular kind of loneliness that can be difficult to explain.
You can have people you love. People who love you. A group chat that is always active. Plans on the calendar. Friends who know your history.
And still, sometimes, you can feel profoundly alone.
For many LGBTQ+ people, the idea of chosen family has become an important and beautiful part of queer culture. When biological families aren't accepting, available, or safe, we build families of our own. We find the people who see us, celebrate us, and make room for us to be fully ourselves.
